French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday the signing of a contract to sell self-propelled Caesar howitzer guns to Armenia, as Yerevan deepens its military ties with the West and moves away from its traditional ally, Russia. Lecornu wrote on X that the contract was signed during a meeting with his Armenian counterpart, Suren Papikyan, without specifying the number of systems Armenia will receive. Armenia is officially allied with Russia, but in recent years it has diplomatically and militarily shifted towards Western countries, accusing Moscow of failing to protect it from its long-standing rival, Azerbaijan. Russia has rejected the criticisms and warned Armenia against allying with the West.
