Houthi Threats: Don't Force Us to Cut the Red Sea Cables

The Houthi group in Yemen has threatened the international military coalition led by the United States to strike global internet cables. The group stated, "The global internet cables that pass through the Bab al-Mandab Strait are under our control." The Yemeni armed forces mentioned, "Our position is principled and steadfast and will not change regarding the injustice faced by the Palestinian people and their cause, and it will not waver regardless of developments or challenges. We are ready at any moment to confront any aggression against our country."

They added, "We warn the United States of the consequences of escalation against Yemen and caution countries that Washington seeks to involve in protecting the ships of the Israeli occupation."

A few days ago, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced from Tel Aviv the launch of the "Prosperity Shield" coalition, stating that the coalition is a multi-national maritime protection force aimed at reinforcing the fundamental principle of freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, with the goal of countering Houthi attacks on Israeli ships.

A few months ago, the Israeli Ministry of Finance announced that Israel is in the process of laying a 254-kilometer fiber optic cable between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, which will create a continuous link between Europe, the Gulf states, and Asia. The ministry stated in a release that the state-owned Europe Asia Pipeline Company will lay the cable along the oil pipeline it operates through Israel between the port of Ashkelon on the Mediterranean and Eilat on the Red Sea. The project transforms Israel into a land communication bridge connecting Gulf states and Asia with Europe.
