The number of victims from the low pressure system known as "Low Pressure Al-Mutair," which is affecting the Sultanate of Oman, has risen to 13 deaths, mostly school students whose vehicle was swept away in the Wilayat of Samad Al-Shan. This morning, two of the five missing persons were found. Civil defense and ambulance teams managed to rescue 1,200 people from a school in the Wilayat of Al-Mudhaibi after their school was inundated with water.
In a statement issued by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers today, the council expressed its "sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased students" in the Northern Sharqiyah Governorate, due to heavy rainfall and flash floods associated with the exceptional weather conditions.
Omani television warned of continuing activity from thunderstorm cells and varying rainfall on parts of the South Al Batinah, Muscat, Al Dakhiliyah, and Al Dhahirah Governorates. The television quoted meteorologist Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Balushi, who stated: "We expect heavy rains today, concentrated in the South and North Sharqiyah Governorates and southern areas of Al Dakhiliyah Governorate."
Al-Balushi noted that "the peak of the weather event today will extend from noon until night." He added, "We have monitored a thunderstorm cell that could deepen and significantly affect Al Dakhiliyah Governorate and areas of the South and North Sharqiyah Governorates."
Al-Balushi also forecast heavy rainfall for tomorrow, Tuesday, focusing on the Musandam, North Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, and Al Buraimi Governorates, gradually extending to the Al Dakhiliyah, South Al Batinah, and Muscat Governorates.
