Four migrants drowned in the English Channel late Thursday to Friday off the northern coast of France while trying to cross to Britain, according to the French maritime police on Friday. A patrol boat was dispatched to the site after receiving a report of a migrant boat sinking during its attempt to cross the Channel. A helicopter recovered four bodies from the water while others were rescued, according to the police. This brings the number of people who have died this year in attempts to cross from France to Britain to 19, often in boats that are overloaded. Five migrants died on April 23 off the French coast in one of these perilous journeys.
