The Arab League called on the UN Security Council, in a statement issued today, Thursday, on the occasion of the 106th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, to exercise its responsibilities in applying international law. The League urged the Security Council to fulfill its duties, applying standards of justice and fairness, overcoming the state of paralysis and absence, and working to provide international protection for the Palestinian people who are facing unprecedented Israeli aggression in Gaza and the West Bank, including the city of Jerusalem.
It warned that what is happening "these days in Gaza and the occupied West Bank is merely a continuation of the series of massacres, displacement, and emptying the land of its original inhabitants that began with the infamous Balfour Declaration," emphasizing that the responsibility today falls on the international community, particularly the Security Council, to take decisive and swift action to protect the Palestinian people and restore their rights from the consequences of that disgraceful declaration and this criminal war. This includes obligating the Israeli occupation authorities to immediately stop their aggression against civilians, halt forced displacement, ethnic cleansing, and the systematic destruction of the lives of the Palestinian people, as well as confronting the apartheid system, colonial settlement, and violations of lives and Islamic and Christian sanctities, especially in Jerusalem and the Noble Sanctuary.
It affirmed that "being on the right side of history means standing with Palestinian rights and the Palestinian people, and that there is no other formula that can lead to stability and security in the region other than establishing an independent Palestinian state along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with relevant international laws and decisions, and the Arab Peace Initiative."
The Arab League stated: "This day marks the 106th anniversary of the infamous statement made by British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour on November 2, 1917, to establish a national home for Jews in Palestine, while the Palestinian people in Gaza and throughout the occupied Palestinian territories are facing a brutal and escalating destructive war, leaving thousands of martyrs and tens of thousands of innocent wounded civilians due to the destructive Israeli bombardment, characterized by a series of continuous horrific massacres, the latest of which was the criminal massacres in the Jabalia refugee camp, resulting in more than 500 martyrs, bringing the number of genocidal massacres since October 7 to over 950 against innocent unarmed civilians, particularly women and children."
The Arab League expressed its appreciation for the struggle and resilience of the Palestinian people, valuing their precious and immense sacrifices to restore and exercise their legitimate rights to freedom and independence and to establish their independent state on their national soil, affirming its deep pride in the struggles of the Palestinian people and its appreciation for their steadfastness in defending their inalienable rights.
It stressed the continued support of the Arab nation, states, and peoples for this great steadfastness and glorious struggle of the Palestinian people to attain their freedom and independence and to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
