Environmental authorities in Egypt's Red Sea Governorate reported finding dead sheep in the northern Red Sea, specifically in the Abu Nuhas area, after they were discarded by a passing ship in the shipping lane. The Ministry of Environment has moved to investigate and identify the ship that discarded the dead sheep, impacting the ecological life directly. The Abu Nuhas area is located approximately 35 kilometers from the city of Hurghada, specifically west of Shawwan Island.
Hassan Al-Tayyib, the founder of the Red Sea Marine Rescue Society, confirmed that the incident of discarding dead sheep is real and has been observed, explaining that this action negatively affects marine life and directly harms the tourism sector. He stressed that the disposal of dead animals adversely impacts tourism and triggers aggressive shark behavior, posing a significant threat to tourism in the Red Sea, tourists, and diving personnel, according to local media reports.
He added that the reason behind this phenomenon is the ferries coming from southern countries loaded with sheep, calves, and camels, which discard the dead animals into the waters of the Red Sea while passing through Egyptian territorial waters. Al-Tayyib pointed out that there are penalties in environmental law that should be applied to those ships in violation of Egyptian regulations, and a team from the Ministry is surveying the entire area to collect and remove the dead animals observed in the Red Sea.
