Google has announced that its Google Translate app will now offer users an additional 110 languages. Google stated on its official websites: "The latest update for Google Translate is the largest ever and represents a significant leap; the service previously supported 133 languages, and with this update, 110 more languages will be added."
Google noted that it was able to support its service with these new languages using the Google PaLM 2 software, which relies on artificial intelligence and can perform well with languages that are closely related, such as some languages used in India or Creole languages spoken in Mauritius and Seychelles, for instance.
The list of new languages to be supported by the service includes Cantonese, a language that many Google Translate users have requested for a long time, but which was challenging to add due to the difficulty of training AI software on its terminology. Additionally, several languages used in Africa that are spoken by millions of people have also been added to the service.
