Frontska: Strengthening Women's Rights is Essential During Crises

The United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon, Joanna Frontska, accompanied by the UN Women Country Representative in Lebanon, Jeilan Al-Masiri, met in Tripoli with groups led by women and NGOs active in empowering women and girls, as well as peacebuilding and enhancing social stability, through inclusive political dialogue and social integration along with protection and economic empowerment services, on the occasion of "International Women's Day." She stated, "I have met inspiring women throughout Lebanon who play leadership roles in trying to make their communities more peaceful and inclusive, demonstrating skill and contributing to a more sustainable future for their country," pointing out that "creating a favorable environment for promoting the rights of women and girls and their participation is essential, especially during times of crisis, so that Lebanon can benefit from the full potential of all its citizens."

Frontska also met with a group of young men and women at Al-Azm University, who discussed "the impact of the social and economic crisis in Lebanon on youth regarding educational and job opportunities, particularly in Tripoli," expressing their "aspirations for change and building a better future in all Lebanese regions." At the Rouad Development Center, the Special Coordinator learned about peacebuilding efforts, including providing a space to engage youth across sects.

In a discussion with local women’s NGOs funded by the Women, Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF), both the Special Coordinator, UN Women, and participants emphasized the "necessity of improving women’s political participation, in addition to their involvement in peace and security issues." Frontska also attended the play "Bahlem Ehlam," featuring Lebanese and Syrian women organized by the "Women Now for Development" organization and UN Women as part of a project to empower women in facilitating peaceful dialogue and inclusion within their communities.

For her part, Al-Masiri pointed out that "the courage and commitment of the women and men we met today in Tripoli represent a beacon of hope for a more just society that can elevate and call for the voice of every woman and respect her rights." It is noted that "the United Nations reaffirms its commitment to supporting the inclusion and empowerment of women and girls as part of its comprehensive efforts to support peace, security, and development in Lebanon."
