A survey has shown that those who spend more time outdoors enjoy better health, becoming more active and productive than those who do not. The new study, based on the survey, found that individuals who spent 20 hours or more weekly in green or natural spaces were 41% more productive on average each day than those who spent less than 30 minutes outdoors weekly. Three-quarters of adults claim that spending time in nature or green spaces gives them a boost of happiness throughout the day.
The study, conducted on 2,000 adults, revealed that 79% stated it makes them feel healthier and more active. Key health benefits reported by participants from being outdoors include a clearer mind (44%), healthier sleep (28%), and lower stress levels (38%), alongside feeling physically and mentally better (70%). Conversely, those who spend more time indoors than they desire often report feeling sluggish (37%), fatigued (25%), and isolated (16%).
This study follows previous research conducted in 2022, which indicated that spending time in nature can benefit long-term health and well-being. Notably, 54% of survey participants indicated that their attitudes toward the environment were influenced by spending time outdoors, and 13% started picking up litter during walks. Two-thirds noted that being outdoors makes them care more about their health, with 46% feeling relaxed and 42% feeling calmer.
The study, conducted by OnePoll, also revealed that the best aspects of being outside include fresh air (64%), scenic views (47%), and seeing animals and wildlife (46%).
