Feminist organizations condemned the incident of the rape and murder of a Sudanese infant in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, demanding the harshest penalties for the accused. The Sudanese child, Janet Jumaa, who was 10 months old, lost her life after being raped by a delivery worker from a well-known restaurant in Cairo, according to a statement issued by more than 60 feminist groups.
According to "Masrawy," the delivery worker, who lives in the same building, kidnapped Janet and sexually assaulted her inside an apartment on the 13th floor, covering her mouth to prevent her from screaming. The same site reported that the accused feared Janet's cries and constant wailing, so he strangled her until she breathed her last, then decided to keep the body until two o'clock last Friday morning, after which he left the building and dumped her body in a garden.
The Refugee Platform in Egypt stated that Egyptian authorities managed to arrest the suspect (22 years old) and presented him to the prosecution, which decided to hold him for 4 days pending investigations, on charges of sexually assaulting an infant and ending her life. The platform, an independent organization that works for human rights defense and supports mobile persons and advocates for their rights, reported in a statement that the suspect confessed before the prosecution to the accusations against him, according to the lawyer for the victim's family.
The lawyer indicated that the suspect admitted the details of the incident and reenacted the crime, prompting the prosecution to issue a new decision to detain him for 15 days pending further investigations. It was reported that the suspect confessed before the prosecution that he saw the little girl in front of her family's home without anyone accompanying her, took her, and sexually assaulted her, claiming he did not intend to kill her. He appeared to show no remorse for the rape but seemed apprehensive about the murder charge.
The incident has sparked a wave of solidarity on social media with the victim and her family, while activists and rights advocates called for greater awareness of child issues within communities. The group "Women Against Injustice" and "Coalition to End Violence and Violations" issued a joint statement condemning the incident and demanded expedited legal proceedings to ensure the accused receives the necessary punishment. The statement noted that the incident reflects part of the suffering faced by Sudanese refugees in Egypt and elsewhere, calling for efforts to end the war to alleviate the suffering of Sudanese people.
