UAE Sees Largest Improvement in Global Peace Index

The United Arab Emirates has witnessed the largest improvement in promoting peace worldwide, advancing 31 positions according to the eighteenth edition of the Global Peace Index, released on Tuesday by the Institute for Economics and Peace in Sydney. Report author and foreign policy analyst Steve Killilea stated, "Since 2021, the UAE has seen its rating improve more than any other country, climbing 31 spots to rank 53 in 2024. The UAE has also enhanced its diplomatic and trade relations with Iran and Turkey, and strengthened diplomatic ties more broadly across the region."

The UAE also experienced improvements in the three areas of the index: community safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and levels of militarization. Killilea added, "Internally, the UAE enjoys very low crime rates, with improved scores in political terror levels and the impact of terrorism on the state over the past year."

The report noted that the UAE has made significant strides in improving relations with key regional competitors in recent years, enhancing its diplomatic and commercial relationships with Iran and Turkey, and utilizing its financial power to improve ties across the wider region, as well as in East Africa and South Asia. The study indicated that the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and several other middle powers are becoming more actively involved in global affairs. The index ranks 163 countries and independent regions worldwide based on their levels of safety, stability, and security.
