The Best Time to Take Vitamin D

Vitamin D is only available in very few food sources, making it difficult to obtain unless one is regularly exposed to sunlight. Therefore, many people resort to taking dietary supplements rich in it at different times of the day. Studies suggest that Vitamin D plays an important role in boosting immune function, bone health, and mental well-being. For older adults, individuals with darker skin, those who are overweight, or those living in areas with limited sunlight, the risk of deficiency is higher compared to others.

Doctors recommend taking Vitamin D supplements with meals to enhance absorption, as it is fat-soluble. This means it does not dissolve in water and is better absorbed into the bloodstream when combined with fatty foods. Some people find it easier to remember to take Vitamin D in the morning upon waking, whereas a deficiency in Vitamin D can adversely affect sleep quality.

Some studies indicate that taking Vitamin D supplements at night may interfere with sleep, but researchers have not yet been able to scientifically validate this information. Besides supplements, regular direct sunlight exposure during the midday to 3 PM is one of the best ways to obtain Vitamin D. Some foods are also rich in it, such as red meat, fatty fish, liver, and egg yolks.
