Britain Elects Its Most Diverse Parliament in History

The new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to oversee the most diverse parliament ever in terms of ethnic diversity and the number of women among its members, following a landslide victory for his Labour Party in the elections held yesterday, which ended 14 years of Conservative rule. Black, Asian, and other ethnic minority members will make up about 13 percent of the British House of Commons, compared to about 10 percent after the previous parliamentary elections in 2019. This will be the highest percentage of members from ethnic minorities in the council, according to an analysis by the British Future research institute. However, this percentage does not fully reflect the diversity among the population and voters, as approximately 18 percent of the population in England and Wales comes from Black, Asian, mixed, or other ethnic minority backgrounds, according to official data. The new parliament will include 242 female MPs, an unprecedented number that exceeds the previous election results by 22 women. Although final results have not yet been announced, the Labour Party won the parliamentary elections held yesterday, securing 412 seats.
