A source in the French public prosecutor's office for terrorism matters announced that police arrested a man, who supports the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement (Hamas), on terrorism-related charges for attempting to kill a taxi driver with a knife. France is on high alert security-wise in preparation for hosting millions of visitors, athletes, and world leaders during the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, which are scheduled to begin on July 26.
The attacker stopped a taxi on Tuesday evening while armed and requested the driver to take him to a remote area near La Ferté-Bernard. The source added that he then forced the driver to exit the vehicle, bound him, and assaulted him with a knife near his neck. The driver managed to escape to a nearby resident's house, and emergency services arrived later to provide him first aid. The source stated that the police arrested the perpetrator early Friday morning in Évry, west of Paris. He is being investigated on charges of terrorism, attempted murder, and kidnapping.
