An Iraqi court revealed the underlying reasons for the rise in divorce cases in the country. According to the Iraqi News Agency, the Personal Status Court in Rusafa identified the reasons for the increasing divorce cases in Iraq. The court stated that the two main reasons for the rise in divorces are social media and economic issues, noting that the Iraqi system of social values is in a constant struggle with other values.
Judge Ahmed Jassem from the court stated that "the Iraqi system of values has not been able to withstand for long against the confrontation with other values, and it is in a constant conflict with them." He added, "The main reasons for the increase in divorce cases are social media, economic problems, the spread of ignorance, the housing crisis, and the unwillingness of many young people to continue their marriage journey, in addition to child marriages."
The divorce phenomenon continues to devastate the lives of tens of thousands of Iraqi families, with around 70,000 divorce cases recorded in courts in 2022, averaging nearly 200 cases daily. In May, the legal committee in the Iraqi parliament revealed that divorce cases in the country exceeded 300 cases daily. Additionally, an official statistic published by the "Judiciary" newspaper, issued by the media center of the Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq, reported that Iraqi courts documented over 4,000 divorce cases involving girls under the age of 15 during the years 2020-2021.
