The UAE has consistently affirmed its strong commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development, and its dedicated efforts towards these goals have earned it a prestigious recognition in the Small Island Developing States Partnerships Awards 2024. These awards aim to recognize countries and entities that have significantly contributed to supporting sustainable development in small island developing states through innovative and effective partnerships.
The UAE secured first place in the economic category, due to the partnership funds established between the UAE and the Pacific Island countries, as well as the UAE and Caribbean countries for renewable energy. The sustainability initiatives, nominated in the economic category by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which provided funding for both projects, reflect the existing strategic partnership between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, and the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company.
The UAE's initiatives aim to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, enhance energy security, and mitigate the impacts of climate change in Caribbean and Pacific regions. In this context, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development raised $100 million and created a collaborative model involving three Emirati entities, a university, and 26 governments from small island developing states, exemplifying the nation's commitment to developing solar and wind energy projects, improving access to energy resources, and promoting economic development in small island developing states.
Furthermore, projects supported by these funds boost local economies, create job opportunities, empower women, and foster innovation and climate resilience.
