The Asian regional office of the International Basketball Federation has announced that Qatar will host the finals of the West Asia Basketball Super League (Final 8) from May 25 to June 1, 2024. This will be the first time Doha hosts the West Asia Basketball Super League, as the finals of the inaugural edition of the competition were held in Dubai, UAE.
Mohamed Saad Al-Mughaiseeb, President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, expressed his happiness at hosting the event in Qatar, stating: "Hosting the finals of the West Asia Super League in Doha this year marks a milestone in the journey of basketball in Qatar. It is not just about showcasing our prowess in the region, but also about laying the groundwork for the next major phase."
In recent years, Qatar has also hosted the U16 Asian Basketball Cup consecutively in 2022 and 2023, and Doha is set to host the Asian Basketball Cup, the leading competition in the region, in 2005.
Six teams from sub-regional leagues have reached the finals (Final 8), with Kuwait SC, the champion, leading the Gulf region along with Manama from Bahrain and Kazma from Kuwait, who secured third place. Meanwhile, teams from the West Asia region include Al-Riyadi from Lebanon, Shahrdari Gorgan from Iran, and Al-Hikma from Lebanon.
These six clubs will be joined by the Kazakh team Astana from Central Asia and the Tamil Nadu club from South Asia. The eight finalists will be divided into two groups of four teams each, with the top two ranked teams from each group advancing to the semifinals, while the third and fourth place teams will be eliminated.
The two finalists will earn a spot in the inaugural Asian Basketball Champions League, which will take place from June 9 to June 15, 2024, in Dubai, UAE.
