Egypt: Warning of Forced Migration Due to Population Increase

The Information and Decision Support Center of the Egyptian Cabinet has confirmed that the growing population, alongside unsustainable production and consumption patterns, is leading to increased demand for natural resources. The center explained that this issue places excessive pressure on land, resulting in degradation, while desertification and drought lead to forced migration. In a post on its official Facebook page, the center noted that population growth and resource pressure expose tens of millions of people each year to the risk of displacement. Therefore, this year’s celebration of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought highlights the future of land management under the slogan: "United for the Land: Our Heritage... Our Future." Based on the latest statistics from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, the population increase in Egypt over the last 15 years, from 2008 to 2023, is estimated at 22 million people, and with the average annual increase applied, it is expected to surpass 110 million by 2025, at an annual growth rate of approximately 1.8%.
