U.S. officials from Cornell University and the State Department stated that four of its lecturers teaching at Peking University in northeast China were attacked with a knife in a public park. Cornell College President Jonathan Brand said in a statement reported by "Russia Today": "The lecturers were attacked while in the park with a faculty member from Peking University, located in a remote part of the industrial city of Jilin." The State Department announced in a statement that it has received "reports of the stabbing and is monitoring the situation." Details regarding the extent of the lecturers' injuries, and whether the attack was targeted or random, remain unclear. Cornell spokesperson Jean Vassar noted in an email: "The college is still gathering information about the incident."
