Wafiq Safa, the head of the liaison unit in "Hezbollah," confirmed that the communications and meetings with Army Commander General Joseph Aoun are of a "non-political" nature. He stated, "We used to meet to prepare for the battle against the extremists, and now we meet to coordinate with UNIFIL regarding what is happening along the southern borders or to coordinate in the process of maintaining security and social stability in some areas of Lebanon. This relates to his role as army commander and the political and social security."
In light of the political, economic, and social disagreements currently occurring in Lebanon, and the negotiations with political factions, Wafiq Safa emphasized in an interview with "Tasnim" that "our job is to coordinate with the Lebanese state regarding its security, judiciary, and army. However, in some cases that have a political security dimension, I may have a role in them; otherwise, I do not negotiate with all the political factions. In Hezbollah, there is a political council that has political relationships, and everyone has their own political connections, and I may participate in one of those matters."
He clarified that the "Mar Mikhael" agreement between the "Free Patriotic Movement" and "Hezbollah" is a "consensus and understanding among the honest in the country that aimed to thwart a divisive conspiracy."
On another note, Safa observed that "Israel is witnessing, firstly, a governance crisis, secondly, an internal Palestinian threat, and thirdly, an external threat at the borders from Lebanon. It is also encountering external threats at the regional level from the resistance axis, which means there is an existential threat and a governance crisis within it." He pointed out that "what has happened in Gaza, the West Bank, and along the borders with Lebanon reveals that Israeli deterrence has eroded."
