Two senior Israeli army officers were assaulted by Haredi youth in Bnei Brak after a meeting with Rabbi David Leibel, who has recently been working on establishing a unit for religious soldiers in the Israeli army. Israeli broadcasting authorities reported that Major General David Zini, head of the army’s training command, and Brigadier General Shai Tyb, head of personnel for the ground forces, were attacked in Bnei Brak.
Bnei Brak is a city on the Mediterranean coast within the Tel Aviv area, known for its majority of religious Jews. According to reports, at the end of the meeting, dozens of religious individuals surrounded the officers' car, throwing objects, including bottles, and shouting hateful slogans such as "murderer." The vehicle was blocked for several minutes before police arrived.
This incident comes as the army is preparing to summon religious Jews for military service following a Supreme Court ruling on June 25, which mandated the conscription of Haredim and prohibited financial aid to religious institutions that do not comply with military service requirements.
