BRICS Virtual Summit on Gaza Developments Kicks Off

An extraordinary virtual summit of the BRICS countries, chaired by South Africa, has commenced today, Tuesday, to discuss the developments in the Gaza Strip and the Middle East region. In a speech, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reiterated "Saudi Arabia's rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians," calling on countries around the world to "stop exporting weapons to Israel." He urged for the commencement of a "serious and comprehensive peace process to resolve the Palestinian issue."

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that "Russia calls for a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and BRICS can be involved in that." He added that "humanitarian ceasefires are a correct step towards peace, and it is important not to drag other countries into the conflict."

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged all parties involved in the Gaza conflict to "immediately cease fire and all attacks against civilians, and to release the civilian detainees, to avoid further loss of life and suffering." He emphasized the importance of ensuring safe and smooth passage for relief materials, expanding humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, and stopping forced displacement, as well as cutting off water and electricity and preventing the entry of fuel.

Participating in this virtual meeting are the leaders of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), along with leaders from invited countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Iran, Argentina, and Ethiopia. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also expected to participate, and the leaders are expected to adopt a joint statement at the end of the summit concerning the developments in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing war in Gaza.
