Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune today, Monday, on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Palestinian news agency "Wafa" reported that President Abbas "informed President Tebboune about the latest political developments related to the Palestinian issue, and about the practices of occupation and aggression against the Palestinian people, which undermine the prospects for peace and the two-state solution."
The Palestinian President discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries and their brotherly peoples, in addition to various international and regional issues of mutual interest, appreciating Algeria's positions supporting the Palestinian cause in all international forums, according to "Wafa."
At the end of the meeting, Abbas stated: "I was honored to meet with my brother, President Tebboune. We have met multiple times and discussed all the issues important to the two countries and peoples, as well as the Palestinian issue, knowing Algeria's historic stance on it. I can say frankly that Algeria has historically and always stood by the Palestinian people and supported them, whether they are oppressors or oppressed. This slogan which was raised in Algeria some time ago is still applied to this day. Algeria supports the Palestinian people under any circumstance and backs them; we know this, and we confirm that we have never needed anything without Algeria being at the forefront in providing it to the Palestinian people."
Abbas thanked Algeria for its steadfast and supportive positions towards the State of Palestine and its people, and for its blessed efforts in the matter of national reconciliation. According to "Wafa," the Algerian President reaffirmed his country's support for the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people until they achieve their legitimate rights to freedom and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The meeting was attended by member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization Ziyad Abu Amro, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, the Chief Justice of Palestine, and President Abbas's advisor for religious affairs and Islamic relations Mahmoud al-Habash, as well as the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations Ambassador Riyad Mansour.
Algerian television noted that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in New York on the eve of the ordinary 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting was attended by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amar Ben جامع.
