Drone Attack Targets Peshmerga Headquarters in Kurdistan, Iraq

The Government of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq reported that a headquarters of Kurdish security forces in Erbil Province in the north of the country was targeted "by a drone attack" on Saturday night, causing material damage. It accused "outlawed groups funded by the federal government" of carrying out the attack.

A statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government indicated that "one of the Peshmerga headquarters in the Salah al-Din district of Erbil" was attacked "around 11:45 PM last night." It added that the attack did not result in casualties, only material damage.

The regional government accused "outlawed elements" of executing the attack "with the assistance and support of mercenaries," considering it a "dangerous act." Erbil held the "federal government" responsible "since these outlawed groups are funded by the federal government." It further stated that these groups "operate with the awareness of the Iraqi government, transporting weapons, missiles, and drones, and carrying out attacks against official and military sites."

In turn, Kurdistan Regional Government President Masrour Barzani stated on his X platform that "the federal government must view any attack on the Kurdistan Region as an attack on all of Iraq." He urged Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani to "take practical and effective measures to deter these groups and hold them accountable," amid already strained relations between Baghdad and Erbil.

Meanwhile, a statement from the government’s Security Media Cell noted that the Prime Minister ordered "a comprehensive investigation into the criminal assault" on the Kurdish security forces, in coordination with the security apparatus in the Kurdistan Region to "identify the executing party and the motives behind the escalation that affects national sovereignty."
