The Democratic Gathering reaffirmed its vision for addressing the political crisis and how to achieve the presidential election, based on productive dialogue leading to a resolution that allows for the election of a president and the formation of an effective government.
During its weekly meeting chaired by Deputy Taymour Jumblatt in Kleimansou, the parliamentary bloc emphasized the necessity of implementing required reforms, starting with stopping waste and corruption in the electricity sector, which has drained $24 billion from the public treasury and citizens' funds over the past ten years, benefiting those who profited at the expense of the public debt. This necessitates the enforcement of existing laws, the establishment of a regulatory body for electricity, and holding accountable all those involved in this ongoing scandal under the banners of loans and suspicious fuel ships.
The Democratic Gathering also called for the collection of fees and fines on marine and river properties, the imposition of taxes on wealth and uninvested properties, a review of some inflated state expenditures, the reduction of tax evasion, combating smuggling, and controlling legal and illegal crossings.
Judicially, the participants stressed the need for the judiciary and the Court of Accounts to take action following the referral from the Minister of Interior regarding the operations in the vehicle registration department. Furthermore, they insisted that citizens should not be left at the mercy of negligence concerning food safety or their access to healthcare, and that regulatory bodies must fulfill their roles in legally pursuing anyone who dares to jeopardize public health.
In the educational sector, the Democratic Gathering demanded the necessary funding to start the academic year and that the Lebanese University be granted all required funding to continue its national academic mission.
