Controversy Between Sadr and Al-Qarni on Ashura

Iraqi cleric and leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, sparked widespread controversy after calling on his supporters to "curse all of Banu Umayyah" on the occasion of Ashura. Al-Sadr published a series of tips on his verified page on "X," addressing "the processions and reciters on the Day of Ashura for Hussain, peace be upon him." In one of the tips, al-Sadr wrote: "Curse the killers of Hussain during the processions and from the pulpits, I mean all of Banu Umayyah and those like them," according to him.

The hashtag "May Allah curse Banu Umayyah" trended on X, leading Saudi preacher Aaidh Al-Qarni to respond by stating: "In response to this sectarian hashtag, may Allah curse Banu Umayyah, rather may Allah be pleased with them and grant them satisfaction." Al-Qarni listed prominent Islamic figures from Banu Umayyah, such as Uthman ibn Affan, and noted that "Islam was never as honored after the Rightly Guided Caliphs as it was during the era of Banu Umayyah, may Allah be pleased with them." He added: "Refer to history; may Allah forgive us and you and have mercy on Banu Umayyah," according to him.
