Jordanian Monarch Issues Decision to Dissolve Parliament

The Jordanian Royal Court announced the dissolution of the House of Representatives, effective from today, Thursday, in accordance with a royal decree by King Abdullah II of Jordan. The current House of Representatives was elected on November 10, 2020. The decision to dissolve the council comes within the constitutional deadlines which stipulate that the council must be dissolved four months before the end of its designated four-year term.

The current electoral law in Jordan, enacted in early 2022, allocated 41 seats for political parties out of a total of 138 seats in the council. Thirty-eight parties, including the Islamic Action Front, the political arm of the non-licensed Muslim Brotherhood in the country, have announced their participation in the upcoming elections for these seats.

The allocation of parliamentary seats to parties at a rate of 30 percent in the upcoming House of Representatives creates conditions for competitive party participation in the race for legislative seats, amidst the challenging task of attracting voters to the polls after a prolonged party vacuum and concerns over the parties' inability to regain public trust due to the lack of substantial electoral programs and hesitance to promote them early.

The royal decree to dissolve the House of Representatives was issued today, July 25, 2024.
