An Iraqi security source revealed details of the events that took place early Tuesday morning in Baghdad and the Anbar province in western Iraq, noting that two drones, one of them American, attacked a convoy belonging to an Iraqi armed faction. The source explained that "an American drone targeted a military pickup truck (Houthi) carrying ammunition on the Abu Ghraib highway, and the vehicle was heading from Baghdad to Anbar, with the ammunition belonging to (Kata'ib Hezbollah) catching fire during the attack."
Furthermore, the source mentioned that "a second unidentified drone opened fire with heavy weaponry in the Al-Ramadi district towards the Al-Tharthar desert," adding that "two injured individuals from (Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq) were taken to Al-Ramadi hospital, but they refused to reveal their real names. When a local police force arrived to inquire about the details, they reiterated their refusal and were threatened before the police withdrew."
The source indicated that "at three-thirty in the early morning of Tuesday, the Ain al-Assad base was targeted with two rockets launched from the Kilometre 35 intersection, which is 64 kilometers from the base." According to the source, "at five in the morning, a pickup truck with a generator was found in the area 35 west of Al-Ramadi, where an anti-terrorism unit responded to and searched the strike site."
Iran-aligned armed factions have intensified their attacks on military bases of the international coalition against ISIS led by the United States in Syria and Iraq following the events of October 7 in Gaza. A few days ago, U.S. State Department spokesman Samuel Werberg described the ongoing and increasing attacks on military bases housing American forces in Iraq and Syria as "unacceptable and unsustainable," affirming his country's readiness "to take further necessary measures to protect our people and our facilities."
This comes as the Pentagon revealed that American forces have faced dozens of attacks by drones and rockets in Iraq and Syria over the past weeks in response to Washington's support for Israel in the war on Gaza. Approximately 2,500 American soldiers are deployed in Iraq for advisory missions to Iraqi forces in the framework of combating ISIS, while around 900 American soldiers are stationed in various bases in Syria.
