Lapid: Enlisting Haredim Is an Existential Security Need

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid stated today, Monday, that "enlistment in the Israeli army is an existential security need." Lapid said, "It will be necessary to recruit at least 10,000 Haredi youth, and they must be recruited quickly." He added, "We will act through the committee, in front of the Ministry of Defense, and ensure that sufficient orders are sent so that there are enough soldiers." This announcement was received by 1,000 Haredi youths yesterday. "Enlistment in the IDF is not a request program. It is the law. It is also an existential security need. We will need to recruit at least 10,000 Haredi youths, and we need to recruit them quickly, this year."

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant approved on Thursday the dispatch of approximately 1,000 recruitment orders for Haredi men next Sunday, marking the first step to implement the decision of the Supreme Court issued last June, which officially ended this community's exemption from military service. According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense, the Israeli army plans to send 1,000 recruitment orders in three phases to achieve its goal of enlisting 3,000 Haredi recruits this year.
