Turkey Joins South Africa's Case Against Israel

A diplomatic source announced that Turkey will today, Wednesday, present a declaration to join the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The announcement is set to be made at 1:30 PM GMT, following Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's statement earlier this week that Turkey would issue the declaration today. The source noted that "Turkey's intervention will prompt the international community to recognize and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza."

In May, Turkey announced its decision to join the case filed by South Africa as part of its escalating actions against Israel due to its attacks on the Gaza Strip, adding that its efforts will adhere to the necessary legal preparations for this step. In June, Spain indicated that it had requested to join the case at the International Court of Justice.

The International Court of Justice is the highest court in the United Nations and was established in 1945 to deal with disputes between states. Israel has repeatedly denied the allegations of genocide, describing them as baseless, and stated in court that its operations in Gaza are self-defense actions targeting Hamas militants who attacked Israel on October 7.
