Erdogan Assigns Foreign Minister to Meet Assad and Begin Normalizing Relations

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced today, Friday, that he has tasked Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan with meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to begin restoring relations with Syria.

In another context, Erdogan stated at a press conference during the NATO summit that it is impossible for the Israeli government to continue its partnership with NATO. He added, "Until a comprehensive and sustainable peace is achieved in Palestine, Turkey will not agree to any cooperation attempts with Israel within the alliance."

Furthermore, he mentioned that Turkey is also continuing its diplomatic efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. Regarding "counter-terrorism," Erdogan indicated that Turkey expects solidarity from its allies concerning "counter-terrorism," which is one of the two main threats identified by the alliance. He added, "This is what the alliance law requires."

Concerning Turkey's purchase of F-16 fighter jets from the United States, Erdogan clarified that he spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden, who told him, "I will resolve this issue within 3 to 4 weeks."

Regarding Turkey's bid to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Erdogan stated: "Our goal is to become a permanent member of the organization, not a observer member."
