An Israeli settler shot and killed a Palestinian today, Friday, claiming the individual was armed with knives and explosives near a city in the northern West Bank. The Israeli military stated in a separate briefing that its forces raided a town near Ramallah overnight and opened fire on a crowd that was throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, resulting in one person being injured, though it did not specify whether they were killed or wounded. Tensions in the West Bank have been increasing for months, marked by near-daily raids conducted by the Israeli military and escalating violence by settlers amidst a wave of attacks carried out by Palestinians.
Palestinian officials confirmed the death of a 21-year-old man at the hands of an Israeli settler near Qalqilya today but did not report any casualties during the army's raid in the town of Ni'lin near Ramallah on the same day. Relatives of the victim told Reuters that they were unaware of any connection he had with any armed Palestinian group and indicated that the military is still holding his corpse.
On Thursday, a gunman from the Islamic Resistance Movement “Hamas” opened fire in Tel Aviv, injuring three people, one of whom is in critical condition, before being killed by police and a bystander. Hamas stated that the attack was a response to the killing of three armed Palestinians by Israel in the West Bank earlier that day. The Israeli military reported that it arrested relatives of the Hamas gunman and ordered the demolition of his home during the raid conducted in Ni'lin today.
Israel asserts that the demolition of militants' homes aims to deter potential attackers, a policy that Palestinians and human rights groups condemn as collective punishment. Over the past year, Israeli forces have carried out thousands of arrests in the West Bank and killed more than two hundred Palestinians, including militants and civilians. During the same period, more than 40 Israelis and foreigners were killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians.
