On Thursday, Major General Yahya Rasoul, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, announced that "some of those responsible for the attack that targeted the US embassy in Baghdad on December 7 are linked to certain Iraqi security agencies." He stated in a press release that "security forces have arrested individuals accused of carrying out the attack and are pursuing others." Rasoul affirmed that "the attack on the US embassy and the National Security Service headquarters, along with some government buildings, is an assault on Iraq's security and sovereignty."
He stressed that "such attacks cannot go unnoticed or unaddressed, as they represent a serious threat to the country's security and stability, inflict damage on Iraq's reputation and dignity, and cast doubt on its credibility as a sovereign state capable of fulfilling its international obligations and ensuring the safety of its citizens and residents, especially diplomatic missions."
Rasoul indicated that "security agencies have begun an investigation into the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice, following direct instructions from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani." He noted that "the security agencies, after intensive technical and intelligence efforts, managed to identify the assailants, revealing that some of them, unfortunately, have connections with certain security agencies. Following the issuance of judicial orders for inquiries and arrests against them, security forces have apprehended several individuals, and efforts to search and investigate continue to reach everyone involved in this attack, ensuring they face justice in the specialized courts and receive their due punishment according to the law."
Rasoul also mentioned that "the relevant authorities successfully identified those who assisted the perpetrators and provided them with logistical support to reach the execution area and evacuate them, and they have been detained to take legal action against them." He pointed out that "Iraq has overcome security challenges and completed the establishment of its constitutional institutions, reinforcing sovereignty and stability—an achievement that has been paved by the sacrifices of our people and armed forces in all their forms, and it is a result that cannot be compromised in the face of all threats, and there is no alternative to establishing security, as Iraq is on the brink of a long-awaited urban and service renaissance." He affirmed that "such attacks only harm the interests of Iraq and its people."
