Clarification of the Circumstances Surrounding the Shooting Incident Involving a Progressive Socialist Official

The General Directorate of Internal Security Forces — Public Relations Division announced in a statement that on May 13, 2024, in the area of Zoqaq al-Blat, Batrakiah Street, in front of the Ma'niye School, an unknown individual on a small motorcycle, wearing a helmet, opened fire with a military-type pistol at three young men present in the area, one of whom is an official in the Progressive Socialist Party. This resulted in injuries to all three, and they were transported to the hospital for treatment. The shooter fled to an unknown location, and a state of tension prevailed in the area where the incident occurred.

In the announcement, it stated that the information division immediately began its procedures at the shooting scene, where it became evident that three individuals were involved in the incident on two motorcycles: the first was white, carrying the shooter, and the second was red, carrying two unknown individuals who were monitoring the operation.

The Directorate clarified that, as a result of the ongoing inquiries, the division was able to identify the suspect accused of the shooting, named: A. Y. (born in 2000, Lebanese). On the same date, he was apprehended by one of the division's patrols. During questioning, he initially denied any relation to the shooting; however, after being confronted with solid evidence proving his involvement, he admitted that he had shot at the three young men out of revenge, as they had previously detained and assaulted him about two weeks prior under suspicion of theft. He added that the accomplices who were monitoring and providing protection during the operation were: A. Y. (born in 1994, Lebanese) and H. Sh. (born in 1996, Lebanese). Consequently, the special forces in the division were tasked with locating them, and on May 15, 2024, after careful observation and monitoring, they managed to apprehend them.

Legal procedures were undertaken against the detainees, and they were referred to the competent authority as per the judiciary's directive.

In this context, the head of the Progressive Socialist Party, MP Taymour Jumblatt, visited the injured individuals from the Drousi incident at the American University of Beirut Medical Center to check on their health, accompanied by MP Wael Abou Faour, the Beirut Internal Affairs Delegate of the Progressive Socialist Party Bassil Al-Aoud, and Jumblatt's advisor Hossam Harb.
