The Arab League Calls for Action to Address Drought with Women's Support

The Arab League emphasized the importance of collective efforts among Arab countries to tackle the phenomenon of drought and desertification, given that several Arab nations are suffering from water resource shortages that have led to land degradation and a reduction in agricultural areas. In a statement issued on the occasion of World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, celebrated annually on June 17th, the league noted that this year's celebration is under the slogan "Women – Their Land – Their Rights." This aims to highlight the impacts of drought and desertification on women and their rights to own and manage land to contribute to combating drought, in addition to affirming women's rights to work in various sectors, including agriculture.

The Arab League underscored the importance of supporting women's rights in all aspects of life, noting that the issue of drought is among the key topics followed by its General Secretariat through the Environment and Meteorology Affairs Department and the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs. It also highlighted the follow-up on drought issues by the Arab team responsible for monitoring international environmental agreements related to biodiversity and combating desertification, indicating that this team meets annually to coordinate Arab positions in this field and to organize the work of Arab teams participating in the conferences of the United Nations conventions on biodiversity and combating desertification.
