On the second day of his visit to Germany, King Charles III delivered a speech before the German Bundestag, praising the unity of its stance in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The king's visit to Germany is part of efforts to reset Britain's relationships following its exit from the EU in 2020, and his speech did not reference Brexit.
Charles noted that "war has returned to Europe" since the last time he spoke in this building during a memorial event in 2020, stating: "Since I last spoke in this building, the horrors of war have returned to Europe." He added: "The world has watched in horror... but we have not stood by as bystanders. Even as we abhor the scenes of dreadful destruction, we can draw courage from our unity... in defense of Ukraine... for peace and freedom."
Charles observed that both Britain and Germany have shown "effective leadership," commending Berlin's decision to provide significant military support to Ukraine, describing it as "remarkably brave, important, and worthy of commendation."
