Sale of the Mexican Presidential Plane to Tajikistan

The Mexican government reported yesterday, Thursday, that "the presidential plane was sold to Tajikistan, seemingly concluding the last chapter of a political saga that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has repeatedly used to attack the extravagance of his predecessors."

López Obrador revealed via "Twitter" that "the agreed selling price for the plane, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which was used by his predecessor Enrique Peña Nieto but never by him, was approximately 1.66 billion pesos, or about 92 million dollars."

In a video accompanying the tweet, he pointed out that the sale "showed how Mexican politics have changed under his leadership," emphasizing that "it is important for everyone to know how people used to think and how authorities behaved before."

The president, who travels on commercial flights, noted that "the proceeds from the sale will be used to build two public hospitals with 80 beds each in the southern states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, which are among the poorest regions in the country. Military engineers will oversee the construction, and they will be inaugurated before the end of my presidency."

Shortly after taking office in late 2018, López Obrador announced plans to sell the marble-decorated plane, which was adorned with official government seals on the walls alongside several flat-screen televisions.
