The Telegraph reported today, Wednesday, that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has decided not to dismiss Home Secretary Suella Braverman due to her handling of a speeding violation last year. The newspaper noted that it is also unlikely that the minister will face an investigation regarding the offense.
Confirming this, Sunak mentioned in a speech today that her actions did not amount to a violation of ministerial conduct rules and would not be subject to further investigations, although he acknowledged that she could have acted better. The Sunday Times previously reported that Braverman had asked government officials to assist her in organizing a driving awareness course to prevent her speeding violation from becoming public knowledge.
On Monday, the minister stated in Parliament, "Last summer, I was speeding. I regret that. I paid the fine and accepted the penalty. I did not try at any time to evade the punishment." Opposition parties have urged the Prime Minister to investigate whether Braverman violated ministerial conduct rules concerning her handling of the incident. Ministers are not allowed to enlist government officials to assist with personal matters.
