Shia: Elect a President Free from Corruption or External Influence

The American Embassy in Beirut commemorated the 247th anniversary of the United States' independence, during which Ambassador Dorothy Shea delivered a speech via video from Washington. She noted that "there has been much interest in the rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and the potential implications it may have on Lebanon," clarifying that "her country hopes to reduce regional tensions." However, she emphasized that "real change in Lebanon will not come from outside your borders; the future is in your hands, Lebanese people."

She addressed the audience, stating: "We all know the actions that need to be taken, and many individuals in this room have the ability to help change the course of Lebanon. First and foremost, Parliament must perform its sovereign duty by reaching a consensus, maintaining a quorum, and electing a president who can work with a fully empowered government to implement reforms that will put the economy back on track for the benefit of all Lebanese."

She added: "We look forward to partnering with a president we can rely on to put the interests of the country first. A person free from corruption or external influence. We also look forward to coordinating with the future Prime Minister and government, who will play a crucial role in correcting the course of this country, starting with the reforms requested by the International Monetary Fund."

She confirmed that she remains "optimistic about the future of Lebanon, especially with the presence of activists, students, journalists, and civil society leaders in Lebanon." Shea urged Lebanese people to continue working together to face the challenges they encounter and not to divide over political, religious, or national affiliations or other differences.

She expressed hope that "factions will strive to come together for the best interests of the country and its people. The United States will continue to be here as a partner for you, yesterday, today, and tomorrow; we are in this together."
