She was listening to a Sunday sermon about mothers and wanted to acknowledge her father, who had raised her and her six siblings after their mother passed away. She presented a petition calling for a day dedicated to fathers, which was supported by many. Her efforts culminated in success on June 19, 1910, when Spokane celebrated the first Father’s Day, and the celebration of this day spread globally thereafter.
