During her first visit to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in Naqoura, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Ms. Jeniin Hennis-Plasschaert, met today with the head of the UNIFIL mission and its Force Commander, General Aruldo Latharo, as well as UNIFIL peacekeeping forces deployed in southern Lebanon. After visiting the Blue Line, the Special Coordinator stated: "Our joint efforts aim to restore stability along the Blue Line after over eight months of intense exchanges that have disrupted the lives of tens of thousands on both sides. It is crucial for all parties to cease fire and commit to sustainable solutions in line with Security Council Resolution 1701."
The Special Coordinator praised UNIFIL's leadership and the dedication of its peacekeepers, who are always on the ground and continue their patrols in the area south of the Litani River despite difficult and dangerous conditions. Welcoming the Special Coordinator on her first visit to UNIFIL, General Latharo stated: "Despite the current challenges, peacekeeping forces will continue to support the implementation of Resolution 1701 on the ground and engage with both parties through our liaison and coordination mechanisms. We will continue to work closely with the Special Coordinator to urge de-escalation and take steps towards a lasting political and diplomatic resolution."
The two UN officials affirmed that both parties can choose negotiation and peace, and they reiterated the UN's commitment to engaging with all parties and international partners to restore peace, security, and stability in Lebanon, Israel, and the region during this critical time.
