A new Iraqi armed group has claimed responsibility for the recent attack on Ain al-Asad Airbase in the western Anbar province, with reports indicating that at least five American soldiers were killed or injured. The faction known as "Islamic Resistance in Iraq - Revolutionaries" stated in a message posted on its Telegram account, "We announce the targeting of the Ain al-Asad base belonging to the American occupation in western Iraq with several rockets and drones on Monday, August 5, 2024." It added, "We affirm that our operations will be with advanced and continuous capabilities until the last American soldier leaves our beloved Iraqi soil." This comes as U.S. officials told Reuters that at least five American soldiers were injured in the attack on Ain al-Asad Airbase. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that one soldier was seriously injured, and noted that the number of wounded is based on initial information that may change. One official said, "The military personnel at the base are conducting damage assessments following the attack."
