Fenway Sports Group, the owner of Liverpool Football Club competing for the English Premier League title, announced today, Tuesday, the appointment of Michael Edwards, the club's former sporting director, as the director of football operations. In a statement, the group mentioned that Edwards (44 years old) will take on various responsibilities "including unifying efforts to select new leadership" for Liverpool's football sector. Edwards joined Anfield in 2011 and oversaw the performance analysis department before eventually taking on the role of sporting director in 2016. He departed after his contract ended in 2022. The club is currently in the process of selecting a successor for manager Jürgen Klopp, who announced in January that he would leave his position at the end of the current season, and is currently without a sporting director. Liverpool is tied with Arsenal at 64 points at the top of the league but is behind on goal difference, and leads Manchester City, the defending champions, by just one point.
