Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced that "the situation in the West Asia region has reached a worrying point and there is a possibility that control may slip out of the hands of all parties," according to the IRNA agency. He stated, "The Iranian permanent mission in New York has made significant efforts to prevent the adoption of the U.S. unilateral resolution on Gaza."
In a press talk with reporters from the IRNA agency and radio and television upon his arrival in New York last night, he said: "The conditions in the West Asia region, in light of the ongoing massacre and genocide against the civilian population in Gaza, and the blind, unconditional support that the United States and a few European countries provide to the Zionist entity, have reached a concerning point for all countries in the region, and there is a possibility that control may slip out of the hands of all parties."
He continued: "On Tuesday of this week, the Security Council meeting discussed the Palestine issue, and the Brazilian Foreign Minister (in his capacity as the rotating president of the Security Council) had invited me to attend this meeting. However, because we had a South Caucasus meeting in a 3+3 format in Tehran until late Tuesday, it was not possible to arrive on time for the meeting in New York."
He added: "As a result, we will express the positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding regional developments tomorrow at the United Nations General Assembly meeting. At the same time, it is an opportunity for close consultations regarding developments with Mr. Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and during my short stay in New York, we will also pursue other programs."
Regarding the veto on the U.S. resolution, Abdullahian clarified that "Russia, the U.S., and Brazil have proposed draft resolutions regarding the Palestinian issue. Ultimately, the proposed draft resolutions from the United States and Russia were not approved, and now the draft proposed by Brazil in its capacity as the rotating president of the Security Council is on the agenda."
He pointed out that "the important thing regarding the resolution proposed by the United States is that our mission in New York acted very actively, as it did not include the goals we seek, which are to provide stability, security, and peace in the region."
Abdullahian confirmed that "the Iranian mission's efforts at the United Nations helped ensure that the U.S. resolution faced vetoes from China and Russia. In Tehran, discussions were also held with Mr. Lavrov on this matter. Consultations were also conducted with China, but my colleagues and Ambassador Amir Saeed Iravani in New York made significant efforts to prevent the adoption of the U.S. unilateral resolution. What matters to us is the immediate cessation of war crimes and genocide against civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, the immediate and widespread delivery of humanitarian aid, and combating the forced displacement of Gaza's inhabitants, all of which can be included in the agenda of any resolution."
