Asad Issues Decree Amending Military Service Age

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad issued a decree today, Thursday, amending the law on the age of military service, allowing some conscripts in reserve service to pay a cash alternative. The new decree modifies the service age stated in paragraph (W) of Article No. (26) of the Military Service Law issued by Legislative Decree No. (30) of 2007 and its amendments, changing it from (40) to (38).

The decree also permits those who wish to pay a cash alternative instead of fulfilling their legal obligation in reserve service, provided that medical examination results show they fall under one of the following conditions: "minor disability" or "partial disability able to perform service."

Additionally, the decree exempts military personnel who have completed ten years of volunteer service under the new volunteer contract (fighter) from reserve service.

President Assad has issued Legislative Decree No. (20) for 2024 amending one of the provisions of the Military Service Law. Full details of the decree can be found at the link provided.
