Iraqi Parliament member Ali Ni'mah outlined the messages from the Baghdad Conference on Drug Control, held in the capital, noting that Iraq is aware of the dangers of drugs and their impact on society. Ni'mah stated in an interview with "Baghdad Today" that "holding an extensive conference to combat drugs in Baghdad with the presence of interior ministers from several Arab countries, most of which are neighboring Iraq, is an important step to establish a long-term roadmap that considers six key points representing the threat of this scourge to society and its implications for increasing crime rates significantly, according to studies issued by most specialized security centers."
He added, "Baghdad realizes the seriousness of drugs and their profound impact on society; thus, it seeks through its conference to establish high-level coordination committees to combat this scourge through information coordination, securing borders, and tracking international drug trafficking mafias, which are no less dangerous than terrorism." Ni'mah emphasized that "Iraq has successfully dismantled a significant chain of drug trafficking networks in recent months, capturing important figures, some of whom were killed in confrontations," asserting that "the war on drugs is no less dangerous than terrorism."
The parliament member anticipated that "the conference would witness enhanced coordination efforts among the participating countries, leading to greater results in combating drug trafficking networks."
