In a historic turnout, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi won a third presidential term, receiving 89.6% of the valid votes, with a participation rate of 66.8%. In a televised speech following the announcement of his victory in this month's elections, Sisi stated that "the alignment of Egyptians in the presidential elections was a vote before the whole world to reject the inhumane war in Gaza." He emphasized that "the war between Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement 'Hamas' poses a threat to Egyptian national security."
The Egyptian president said: "I speak to you today, filled with happiness at your alignment and involvement in the electoral process, which clearly indicates to all observers inside and outside the country the vitality and effectiveness of Egyptian society in all its segments and classes. It reaffirms that the will of the Egyptians prevails through every Egyptian's voice." He added, "That scene, which I watched closely, compels me to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to all Egyptians who participated in this important event during this critical time when the state faces a bundle of challenges on all levels, mainly the ongoing war on our eastern borders, which necessitates mobilizing all our efforts to prevent its continuation, representing a threat to Egyptian national security specifically and to the Palestinian cause generally."
Sisi noted: "It is as if the alignment of Egyptians was a vote for the whole world to express their rejection of this inhumane war, and not merely to choose their president for a new term, in a civilized scene that combined the efforts of the state, government, and people, producing this honorable appearance, which witnessed no violations or security breaches despite such unprecedented crowds."
The Egyptian president stated: "I tell you honestly that I am fully aware of the challenges we have faced and continue to face, and I reaffirm my recognition that the hero in confronting these challenges is the great Egyptian citizen who stood against terrorism and its violence, bore the economic reforms and their impacts, and faced crises with steadfastness, awareness, and wisdom. I renew my covenant with you to exert every effort together to continue building the new republic we seek to establish, based on a common vision that gathers us in a democratic state that respects the constitution and law, progressing steadily towards modernization and development based on science and technology, preserving its identity, culture, and heritage, prioritizing human development, and striving to provide a dignified life for its people with military, political, and economic capabilities that safeguard its national security and the achievements of its people."
He added: "This is the Egypt we all dream of, and these are the Egyptians who are driven by hope to build a great homeland. I will be their voice, defending their dream for Egypt, and we will continue our national dialogue more effectively and practically, benefiting from the rich state witnessed during the electoral process, which resulted in a diversity of ideas and visions due to the varying candidates and their political directions."
The elections took place over three days, from December 10 to 12, and witnessed a massive effort to mobilize voters to achieve a turnout exceeding the 41% recorded in the previous presidential elections in 2018. Sisi ran against three candidates, none of whom were prominent figures. He was first elected president of Egypt in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018.
