The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will arrive tomorrow, Sunday, in the Jordanian capital Amman, as part of his annual solidarity visit during Ramadan that began in Egypt. According to the Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, Farhan Haq, "this visit comes this year during turbulent times amid the aggression on Gaza," emphasizing that the Secretary-General will visit facilities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which provides essential services to the population, highlighting the UN's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities amidst crises.
Guterres is scheduled to visit UNRWA facilities in Amman on Monday, and he will break the fast with several Palestinian refugees and UN personnel in the capital, reaffirming the importance of compassion and unity during times of hardship. On the same day, while in Amman, the Secretary-General will hold meetings with Jordanian officials to enhance cooperative efforts to address regional challenges and promote peace and stability, reiterating his calls for a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan.
During his visit to the Egyptian Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip today, Guterres stated that "the Palestinians—children, women, and men—are living a never-ending nightmare," as the war between Israel and Hamas approaches its sixth month. Guterres mentioned that he comes "bearing the voices of the vast majority of countries in the world that are fed up with what is happening" in the Palestinian enclave, where "homes have been destroyed and families and entire generations have perished amid a famine that surrounds the population."
