Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that NATO plans to establish three military bases on the territory of member states to supply Ukraine with weapons. Orbán stated during a conversation on Hungarian radio "Kossuth" on Friday: "NATO wants to help Ukraine through what is called the Ukrainian NATO mission, which means that NATO will coordinate the transfer of weapons to Ukraine." He added that "NATO" would set up three major bases to supply Ukraine with weapons.
The Hungarian Prime Minister expressed concern that if these bases were established in countries bordering Ukraine, particularly Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, "they would become military targets." Orbán noted that Hungary does not wish to participate in NATO's mission in Ukraine, which involves coordinating weapon supplies and training Ukrainian military personnel, adding that he received assurances from NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, who visited Budapest on June 12, that Hungary would not participate in NATO operations outside its territory.
Last week, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Ukraine has the right, under international law, to strike legitimate military targets in Russia to defend itself. He expressed in a press conference in Sweden that such strikes would be in accordance with international law. This call came after Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to deploy conventional missiles close to the United States and its European allies if they allowed Ukraine to strike deep into Russia with long-range Western weapons.
