Iraq: The Coordination Framework Offers "Sunnis" a Final Opportunity for Agreement

Iraq: The Coordination Framework Offers

A source within the Coordination Framework, which includes Shia forces except the Sadrist movement, stated that the Framework's stance on the issue of amending the internal regulations of the Parliament is "fixed." The source confirmed adherence to the Federal Court's decision to elect one of the candidates in the first session for the election of the Parliament Speaker. The source reported that the leaders of the Coordination Framework emphasized in a meeting today their commitment to the law and the Federal Court's decision, rejecting any amendments to the Parliament's internal regulations.

Additionally, the leaders of the Coordination Framework reiterated their opposition to the idea of reopening nominations for the position of Speaker of Parliament, insisting on maintaining the current candidates and selecting one of them for the role. It was noted that the attendees agreed to hold a special session of the Parliament after the Arbaeen pilgrimage to elect a new Speaker.

However, prominent leader within the Coordination Framework, Amer Al-Faiz, indicated that the Sunni political forces have not reached an agreement despite being given multiple opportunities by the Coordination Framework and the Kurdish political forces. He added that discussions among the Sunni political factions are still ongoing, which is why the issue has been postponed until after the Arbaeen pilgrimage, with hopes of reaching an agreement among the Sunni political forces. Otherwise, the Coordination Framework, in agreement with the Kurdish forces, will take a stance to resolve the matter.

Al-Faiz noted that "Al-Halbousi has informed us that he managed to gather 54 deputies without providing the names of those deputies or their signatures." He emphasized that "the Coordination Framework did not make any decisions during its meeting today; there is nothing clear, which is why they were given another opportunity until after the Arbaeen pilgrimage. Otherwise, we will have a stance, and every incident will have its own discussion regarding the Coordination Framework."
